We started back up the hill with the pans of water.
We set them down and Carol and Maggie got to work making food.
Carl sat down next to me, and I looked at him.
He grinned softly.
I cupped my hand around his face like I was going to tell him a secret, but instead I kissed his cheek.
"Thank you." I muttered.
"Anytime. " he smiled.
Everyone sat in silence.
"Food's ready." Maggie said.
Everyone got their bowl, and sat down to eat.
When everyone was almost done, Beth started singing with her hidden beautiful voice. Maggie soon joined in.
When they finished , everyone clapped.
"Beautiful." Hershel said.
Everyone got ready to go to sleep.
I got on the ground, but could not sleep in all my power.
After a while, I just ended up going to the edge of the hill and hugged my knees to my chest.
I sat looking at the stars.
Soon, a shadow started toward me, and sat right beside me.
"Can't sleep?" Carl asked.
"Not at all." I chuckled.
"I hear ya." He smiled.
A cold wind blew softly over the hill. I rubbed my hands on my arms.
Carl got closer, and draped his arm over my shoulder. I leaned my head into his neck.
I looked up at him under my eyelashes.
He was just sitting there, with the biggest smile on his face.
"Thank you." I murmured.
He looked down at me.
"You like it?" He asked.
"Of course, I love it." I sat up, making sure his arm stayed around me.
I reached into my boot, and grabbed the knife.
I grabbed his free arm and pulled it toward my foot. I placed the knife in his hand.
"I thought of you when I saw this. Thought you might like it."
He opened his hand, and saw the knife sitting in his palm.
"Wow..." He breathed.
"Thank you. I love it."
"Good." I said, smiling.
He leaned back to lay down, and I did the same.
We lay next to each other, close but not touching.
"Goodnight." I murmured.
I suddenly became aware of a slight rattling noise. Her teeth were chattering and she was shivering.
I silently moved closer to her, and wrapped my arms around her.
She stiffened, and quickly spun around in my arms.
Her face was now inches from mine.
She relaxed when she realized it was me.
" Oh, thank god it's just you." She sighed.
I lightly laughed. " Yup. You were shivering really bad so I tried to help."
"Thanks." She blushed. I smiled.
She buried her head into my chest.
" I may not act like it, but I'm really scared. I'm scared to death, Carl."
I placed my chin on top of her head.
" I won't let anything happen to you. I promise."
