It was the same routine every day for Alice Collins. Get up. Get dressed. Socialize with strangers while her parents held a church meeting looking for more members. Same thing everyday. She had to smile and be polite. Never swear. Never act her age. Always act much maturer. Sometimes it felt that she could hardly get a word out about herself without somebody changing the subject to more "Important" matters. Who cares about little Alice, She was just merely a shadow according to her parents. Just a blank page.
That's how Alice felt allot of the time. There was never any kind of excitement in Mullingar, Never anything Alice knew about anyway. She knew that taking over the church when she was old enough was not a particular idea of hers. She'd rather shoot herself in the forehead than ramble on about something that she didn't even believe in. Her parent's didn't know about her disbelief in God. She would get severely punished if they found out.
"Oh Alice dear!" Her mother called out, Alice could tell that there was company, Her mother was never this polite to her unless there were visitors in the house. Alice poked her head out from her room and saw her mother waiting at the bottom of the staircase. Alice fixed her hair with her left hand and walked out of her room, closing the door behind her.
"Yes Mother?" She asked. Her mother made a motioning gesture with her index finger, telling her to come down. Alice rushed down the stairs, trying to act as graceful as she could. Once she reached the bottom of the stairs, her mother led her through to the living room and saw a familiar boy, from her school. His older brother, Mother and his Father.
"Alice, these lovely people are the Horan's, they belong to the church. You remember dear?" Her Mother reminds Alice in a sickly sweet tone.
"Of course, Hello!" Alice greets, waving slightly at the family. They all smile back. Except, That boy at school. He simply let's his eyes wander over Alice while she isn't looking.
'Why must I look so awkward and plain' Alice thought to herself as she tried unbuttoning her top button whilst nobody was watching. Little did she know, That boy from school was watching. Closely too. Once the top button came undone, she felt a little bit more relaxed. Knowing she didn't look as much like a church girl as she did before. Her Mother noticed her unbuttoned top and scowled.
'How dare she let skin show. There are guest here!' She thought angrily to herself.
Alice walked into the kitchen to get a glass of water, It was awfully hot today. She almost felt herself sweat a bit. It didn't help that her house had become so crowded in so little time. Alice walked towards the cupboard and pulled a glass cup out of it. She was about to walk over to the sink when a voice interrupted her.
"Can I get one too?"
Alice spun around and saw that boy from school standing in the archway that leads into the living room. Alice gathered herself quickly and nodded slowly. She reached for another cup out of the same cupboard and filled his glass halfway, then handed it to him.
"I'm Alice" She smiled.
